The bamboos are woven in a time-consuming but sturdy "gui-style" hoop and coiled around the ohitsu. Mr. Yasuo Aoki's ohitsu is made of Kiso sawara cypress, the best material for an ohitsu which is nurtured by the harsh climate of the Shinshu Kiso region.
The bamboos are hand-picked by him. He attains them from the owner of the bamboo thicket in return for taking care of the thicket. When he bulids an ohitsu, the layout of wood panels is skillfully adjusted, following his intuition as a craftsman.
