Sunami Toru Shoten, established in 1886, originally manufactured woven-rush mat in Kurashiki City, Okayama Prefecture, the birthplace of rush and flowered matting. The family business has been maintained by switching to the production of rush baskets, called "yamikago," which were used in the black market after the war.
Mr. Ryuki Sunami, the fifth generation of the family, is the only one in Japan to make newspaper baskets made by weaving ropes of rush like a piece of cloth, shaping it into a basket by hand, and attaching a handle, which are made by hand using a loom inherited from his grandmother.
The Newspaper Basket will gradually change over time from a faint light green to a shallow brown. The more time you spend with it, the more it will become familiar in your hands, and the more memories it will hold for you in the future.
